Industrial PhDs: Researching Where Challenges Arise – Transferencia al aire Podcast

3 September 2026

Transferencia al aire is a radio programme launched by the Knowledge Transfer Service at Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH). Our objective is clear and ambitious: to build strong bridges between university research and the business sector, bringing scientific and innovative knowledge closer to those who can turn it into value for society.

In this final episode of the second season, we focus on one of the university–business collaboration models with the greatest potential to generate innovation: industrial PhDs. This approach allows doctoral research to be carried out while addressing real-world challenges identified by a company, promoting knowledge transfer from the university to the productive sector.

To explore this topic, we are joined by Pedro J. Zapata Coll, Director of the UMH Doctoral School and a researcher with extensive experience in applied research projects and collaboration with companies.

Throughout the programme, we discover what an industrial PhD involves, how one is established, what benefits it brings to the doctoral researcher, the company and the university itself, and why it represents an excellent opportunity to transform knowledge into innovation. In addition, Pedro shares his personal experience of collaborating with companies and offers some key insights for researchers and organisations taking their first steps in this type of initiative.

An episode exploring how doctoral training can become a powerful tool for knowledge transfer and collaboration between the university and business.
