Hormonal Measurement for Athletes
Testosterone and/or Cortisol Measurements to Assess the Athlete’s Hormonal Levels.
TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION
These tests are used to measure the amount of metabolites in athletes’ blood at different points during the season or training periods, making it possible to individualise training loads according to the levels obtained in the assessments.
The tests involve collecting biological samples using Salivettes at different times of the day for subsequent analysis, as well as recording rest duration and stress levels, which will be used to identify the athlete’s level of adaptation.
The following equipment is available to carry out these tests:
- Salivettes for sample collection.
- ELISA kits for Salimetrics hormones.
- Centrifuge.
- Microplate reader for absorbance measurement.
The test will be carried out by a laboratory specialist at the facilities of the Sports Research Centre.
Once the assessment process has been completed, a report will be prepared covering all the variables analysed, together with recommendations on aspects to be improved in order to optimise performance and the athlete’s adaptation to training loads.
TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS
Hormonal assessment is a common test among different types of athletes. On the one hand, strength athletes often assess their current testosterone levels and how these levels evolve throughout training periods. On the other hand, the Testosterone/Cortisol ratio is used to assess the accumulated training load and sports-related stress experienced by athletes.
This type of test can be requested either individually by an athlete or collectively by a team or sports organisation from any sporting discipline interested in determining athletes’ hormonal levels in order to optimise performance and training loads.
ADVANTAGES AND INNOVATIVE ASPECTS
This technology is commonly used in many clinical laboratories, which employ technology similar to that available at the Sports Research Centre. Conducting the analysis at our Centre also makes it possible to benefit from the expertise of a specialist group in sports performance regarding the evolution of hormonal levels.
Once the athletes’ hormonal markers have been analysed, reports and recommendations will be provided to optimise training loads, with a focus on individualising the load and improving the athlete’s adaptation.
DEVELOPMENT STAGE
Fully Operational. The Sports Research Centre has the infrastructure and specialised personnel required to carry out these assessments on a recurring basis for individual athletes or entire squads.
