Promoting Physical Activity and Health in Children and Adolescents

Promoting Physical Activity and Health in Children and Adolescents

Technical advice for implementing programmes to promote physical activity and other healthy behaviours (healthy diet; reducing time spent watching television, playing video games and using mobile phones; reducing alcohol, tobacco and other drug use), as well as promoting respect and social inclusion among children and adolescents.

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

We offer advice and training for the design and implementation of these programmes to:

  • Primary and secondary schools.
  • Local councils.
  • Associations involved in promoting health and wellbeing among young people.

The advisory activities include:

  • Meetings with representatives of organisations responsible for implementing physical activity and health promotion programmes, providing advice on general aspects of programme design and implementation.
  • Training courses for teachers, sports technicians and those directly responsible for implementing the programmes (teacher training for delivering sports sessions, training in methodological aspects for measuring and evaluating the effects of the intervention, etc.).
  • Training sessions with parents.
  • Training sessions with children and adolescents.

TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS

This service may primarily be requested by primary/secondary schools, local councils and associations involved in promoting health and wellbeing among young people. However, it could also be requested by individual families seeking advice on these matters.

ADVANTAGES AND INNOVATIVE ASPECTS

The research group has extensive research and practical experience in this field. The transferable knowledge is highly up to date. This is important because, for example, promoting physical activity and preventing obesity is not straightforward without encouraging rejection of people who are overweight/obese or contributing to eating disorders. Great care must therefore be taken in how information is communicated in this type of intervention.

DEVELOPMENT STAGE

Fully established. The research team has extensive experience in implementing these programmes in real-world settings, with protocols ready to be transferred to new organisations.

APPLICATION SECTORS

  • Education Sector (Primary and Secondary Education).
  • Public Administration (Health, Sports and Education Departments).
  • Non-Profit Organisations and NGOs.
  • Sports and Recreational Management Organisations.
