GPS/GSM Technology for Agrosystem Management
Use of movement data from wild and domestic animals to assess conservation strategies for threatened species and natural areas, land-use planning, infrastructure planning and optimisation of agricultural and livestock resources.
TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION
This technology uses state-of-the-art tracking devices that combine GPS/GSM, accelerometry and solar-panel power supply for the remote monitoring of wildlife and domestic livestock. The data obtained enable large-scale analysis of animal behaviour and environmental variables in real time, facilitating evidence-based decision-making based on spatial data.
The knowledge transferred by the Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation Research Group includes:
-
Movement Ecology: Identification of grazing, home-range and space-use areas with metric-level precision.
-
Habitat Modelling: Creation of predictive spatial models of land use by different species.
-
Landscape Connectivity: Identification of barriers to wildlife movement and analysis of dispersal behaviour that is critical to the survival of threatened species.
-
Biophysical Monitoring: Use of accelerometers to understand behaviour (resting, feeding, fleeing) without the need for direct observation.
TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS
- Development of protection, conservation or management plans for wildlife species (public administrations).
- Assessment of the permeability of linear infrastructure to wildlife movement and suitability of mitigation measures (infrastructure construction companies, public administrations).
- Pasture and extensive livestock management (livestock farmers and public administrations).
- Management of game species (hunting sector and public administrations).
ADVANTAGES AND INNOVATIVE ASPECTS
The technology and associated analytical tools enable large-scale analysis of animal movement patterns with high precision and at low cost.
The UMH Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation Research Group has extensive experience in applying this type of device to mammals, birds and reptiles.
DEVELOPMENT STAGE
GPS/GSM technology is currently under active development internationally, as are its applications in various fields related to environmental and agrosystem management.
The Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation Research Group has extensive experience in managing these technologies and transferring results to public institutions and private companies.
