Virtual Simulation and Semantic Web in Biomedical Environments
Tools that use Virtual and Augmented Reality technology to simulate problems or support users in different contexts. Methodologies for enriching biomedical knowledge resources within the Semantic Web environment, as well as the development of interactive web tools to provide guidance and support for domain experts.
TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION
This technology offer combines two disruptive areas of computing to improve accuracy and training in the healthcare sector. On the one hand, it develops immersive simulation environments and, on the other, optimises the architecture of digital medical language.
The key technological components are:
-
Virtual and Augmented Reality (XR): Development of simulators based on Unity and state-of-the-art SDKs (Oculus, Vuforia and Android Studio). These tools make it possible to recreate complex clinical scenarios or overlay critical information onto the real world.
-
Semantic Enrichment: Methodologies for improving medical knowledge resources according to Semantic Web standards. It uses robust technologies (HTML5, JS, GWT) on the frontend and scalable architectures (MySQL, REST and R for data analysis) on the backend.
TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS
The deployment of these tools has a direct impact on patient safety and operational efficiency:
-
Clinical Decision Support: Interactive web tools that guide medical experts in detecting data inconsistencies.
-
Medical Education and Training: Virtual simulators for practising procedures in a safe and controlled environment.
-
Pharmacology: Augmented Reality systems for the visual identification of risks associated with drug combinations.
-
Healthcare Interoperability: Improvement of the development workflow for international medical terminology standards.
ADVANTAGES AND INNOVATIVE ASPECTS
The tools described improve websites and user understanding. These methods facilitate the enrichment of the language used; this is particularly relevant to automatic response bots, as expanding their language enables them to provide users with more concise and coherent responses.
DEVELOPMENT STAGE
The Virtual Simulation systems are currently at TRL4. The framework for enriching biomedical resources in the context of the Semantic Web is at TRL6.
