Advanced Microscopy and Scientific Image Analysis Platform

Advanced Microscopy and Scientific Image Analysis Platform

Comprehensive high-resolution bioimaging solutions: from the molecular and subcellular scale to three-dimensional mapping of whole organs and organisms.

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

The Imaging Service is a state-of-the-art facility offering comprehensive microscopy and quantitative analysis infrastructure for R&D&I projects. The platform enables biological processes to be observed in 2D, 3D and 4D (time) with exceptional clarity, covering all scales of modern biology.

The technology offering is divided into four highly specialised areas:

  • Super-Resolution Microscopy (PALM/dSTORM, SR-SIM, Airyscan): Makes it possible to overcome the physical diffraction limit of light (250 nm), achieving resolutions of up to 20-30 nm. It is ideal for studying molecular architecture and biochemical processes at the subcellular level in living systems.

  • Light-Sheet Technology (LSFM): Designed for the ultra-fast acquisition of 3D images of transparent samples or cleared tissues (whole brains, embryos, organoids). It enables volumetric reconstructions without the need for physical tissue sectioning.

  • Confocal and Multiphoton Microscopy: Equipment optimised for high-resolution imaging of fixed and living samples. Multiphoton technology enables deep tissue penetration with minimal cellular damage, even allowing in vivo laser ablation.

  • Neuronal Analysis and Stereology (Neurolucida): A specialised system for morphological tracing of neurons, analytical brain mapping and automated analysis of cell population distribution.

TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS

The platform is a strategic partner for innovation in healthcare and biotechnology:

  • Pharmaceutical Industry: Drug screening, cellular toxicity studies and monitoring of molecular biomarkers.
  • Neuroscience and Oncology: Mapping neural connections, studying tumour progression in 3D and analysing tissue microenvironments.
  • Developmental Biology: Real-time monitoring of organ formation in living embryos.
  • Medical Device Validation: Analysis of tissue interactions with implants or drug delivery systems.

ADVANTAGES AND INNOVATIVE ASPECTS

The Institute of Neuroscience (CSIC-UMH) is an internationally recognised centre dedicated to the study of Cellular, Molecular and Systems Neurobiology, as well as Developmental Neurobiology and Neuropathies. Our Imaging Service offers multiple imaging and scientific analysis techniques, for both fixed and living samples, including cell cultures, organotypic cultures and whole animals. In addition, our technical and scientific staff provide:

  • Assistance with all our equipment, as well as advice during experimental design and interpretation of results.
  • We also provide assistance with writing scientific methods for publications, projects and product proposals.
  • Advice on equipment acquisition and maintenance.
  • Support in preparing workshops, demos and pitch decks.

DEVELOPMENT STAGE

The platform is fully operational and available. It currently provides services to international research groups and biotechnology companies and has established itself as a national reference in bioimaging.
