Visual Behaviour Analysis

Visual Behaviour Analysis

Study of visual behaviour through scene recording and identification of visual search strategies.

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

This type of testing has been used to study the visual behaviour of athletes from different sports (tennis, basketball, handball and volleyball) during both real and simulated game situations.

The following equipment is available to carry out the testing:

  • MOBILE EYE-5 Tracking Glasses eye-tracking system (Kaiserslautern, Germany).

Visual behaviour can be recorded autonomously, although the test is supervised by a specialist in sports sciences.

These assessments are accompanied by a technical report provided to the athlete after completion of the testing protocol, together with recommendations aimed at improving visual behaviour and performance.

TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS

This type of service has been requested in a range of settings, including sport, website design, commercial marketing, safety and road safety education. It provides an analysis of users’ visual behaviour to optimise activities in which reaction time is a limiting factor, as well as to optimise the layout and distribution of spaces based on visual behaviour. In educational settings, it has been used to analyse visual attention in learning situations, while in road safety it has been used to study responses to stimuli in driving situations.

ADVANTAGES AND INNOVATIVE ASPECTS

The main advantages of visual behaviour analysis are:

  • Autonomous recording of visual behaviour by the user, allowing the recording system to be worn during real-world activities.
  • Freedom of movement for highly dynamic application areas, particularly those requiring movement and/or changes of direction during the activity being analysed.
  • Individual adjustment of the system to each participant, adapting it to the needs of each user.
  • Minimal obstruction of vision, allowing natural gaze behaviour and ensuring that the recording system interferes as little as possible with the activity being analysed.
  • Real-time eye tracking, enabling both the action and the visualisation pattern to be recorded, displayed and analysed in real time.
  • Visual behaviour reports providing guidance on potential actions aimed at improving and optimising performance.

DEVELOPMENT STAGE

Eye-tracking tests using the visual tracking system are available for use. In addition, the research team has conducted numerous studies in which this type of testing has been used to analyse the visual behaviour of athletes and/or users.
