Wingate Test: Assessment of Anaerobic Power and Capacity

Wingate Test: Assessment of Anaerobic Power and Capacity

Assessment of anaerobic and sprint capacity using a Wingate test

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

These types of tests have been widely used to assess athletes’ anaerobic capabilities during exercise. The test is performed on a cycle ergometer and involves 30 seconds of maximal effort, seated on the saddle, with a resistance load equivalent to 7.5% of the athlete’s body weight, obtaining peak power, mean power and fatigue index measurements.

The following equipment is available to carry out these tests:

  • Bike Med cycle ergometer (Technogym, Italy)
  • 839E cycle ergometer (Monark, Sweden)
  • Kickr indoor trainer (Wahoo, UK)

The assessment is supervised throughout by a specialist technician/researcher (graduate in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences).

These assessments are accompanied by a technical report provided to the athlete after completing the testing protocol, together with possible recommendations aimed at optimising performance.

TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS

This type of service is in demand among athletes who wish to assess their ability to perform short, high-intensity efforts and sustain them for brief periods. It therefore assesses the maximum power generated, as well as the loss of power over time.

This type of test can be requested either individually by an athlete or collectively by a team or sports organisation from any discipline interested in assessing the anaerobic capacity of its athletes, such as athletics, cycling and football.

ADVANTAGES AND INNOVATIVE ASPECTS

The advantage of this test is that it assesses this capacity through a short, non-invasive test that evaluates different parameters of an athlete’s anaerobic capacity, such as maximum sprint capacity and fatigue index.

The research team has participated in numerous studies using this type of test, particularly with cyclists and distance runners, applying the knowledge acquired through research to improve athletes’ performance and providing recommendations and guidance aimed at individualising training loads and adapting them to the athlete.

DEVELOPMENT STAGE

The technology and protocols are fully validated and operational. The team has extensive experience both in the scientific validity of the test and in its practical application in anaerobic and intermittent sports.
