The subject performs a series of repetitions depending on the objective of the selected test (isometric, passive, resisted, etc.). To do so, the subject is seated in the dynamometer seat and the joints involved in the movement being assessed are secured, with the series of repetitions performed as required by the system.

The following equipment is available to carry out this type of testing:

BIODEX SYSTEM 4 PRO isokinetic dynamometer (Enraf Nonius-Ibérica S.A.)

The test is conducted by a graduate in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences at the Biomechanics and Health Laboratory of the Miguel Hernández University of Elche.

Once the test has been completed, a report is provided containing the main results obtained and recommendations for improving and/or optimising performance or preventing injuries.

TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS

Assessment of joint strength using isokinetic dynamometry is in high demand not only in the sports sector but also in healthcare. In sports, its applications are mainly aimed at identifying muscular deficits associated with an increased risk of injury (e.g. hamstring injury risk, ACL injury risk, etc.). It also makes it possible to analyse factors related to sports performance, such as muscular power. Along these lines, in the USA, this equipment is used in numerous centres as an assessment and rehabilitation tool for people with musculoskeletal disorders. Finally, it is currently being used as a tool for people experiencing muscle weakness caused by neurodegenerative diseases.

This type of testing can be useful for sports organisations or clubs in team sports, allowing them to identify potential imbalances among their players and individualise training loads to promote athlete adaptation and injury prevention. This is important not only because injuries affect athlete performance, but also because they have an impact on the organisations and clubs affected by athletes’ absence from competition.

ADVANTAGES AND INNOVATIVE ASPECTS

In this field, the research team has been carrying out knowledge transfer activities for injury prevention in athletes from a wide range of sports, including football, cycling, athletics, judo, canoeing, kayaking, etc., assessing potential bilateral imbalances in athletes. These programmes carried out at the centre have been very well received in the sports sector and are among the most requested tests by high-level athletes.

The main advantages of isokinetic dynamometry are:

Isolated strength assessment, allowing muscular deficits and imbalances to be detected with greater reliability and precision.

Assessment of a wide range of upper- and lower-limb joints.

Assessment of strength during different types of contraction (eccentric, concentric and isometric).

Control of speed during strength assessment (i.e. isokinetic speed), allowing accurate assessment of muscular strength throughout the full joint range of motion.

Selection of the joint range of motion, allowing working ranges to be selected according to the patient’s characteristics. This feature makes it possible to work within ranges where mechanical stress is lower.

Automatic report generation.

DEVELOPMENT STAGE

The research team has participated in numerous projects related to this field, resulting in publications in leading reference journals and the transfer of this knowledge to the sports and healthcare sectors.

APPLICATION SECTORS

Sports Clubs and Federations (Football, Handball, Cycling, Combat Sports).

Advanced Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy Centres.

Occupational Accident Insurance Mutuals and Insurance Companies.

Neurology and Geriatrics Units.

Pharmaceutical Industry (studies on sarcopenia or loss of muscle mass).

PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR

David Barbado Murillo – University Institute for Research, Sports Research Centre

KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER SERVICE

email: transferencia@umh.es Tel: +34 96 522 2599 web: transferencia.umh.es

Assessment of Joint Strength Using Isokinetic Dynamometry
Analysis of joint strength using an isokinetic dynamometer for injury prevention and motor performance.

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

Isokinetic dynamometry testing allows the strength and power of the upper and lower limbs and trunk to be assessed under different conditions and at controlled movement speeds set by the research team.
