Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies enable new models for producing and consuming audiovisual narratives. Authors such as Cho et al. (2016), Mateer (2017) and Syrett et al. (2016) have already highlighted the beginnings of the development of languages and conventions for immersive audiovisual content on these devices, and have pointed to the challenges facing these media. These productions clearly demonstrate the hybridisation of cinematic audiovisual narrative formats with other media and/or products, such as the performing arts, which contribute aspects of conceptual development, and video games, which provide not only the technology for their development (game engines such as Unity or Unreal) but also the conventions of their languages, as narrative environments that enable interaction by the user/viewer. Volumetric cinema is not merely a technological innovation, but a new audiovisual medium that changes the director’s role and empowers the viewer in the process of creating and experiencing a narrative (Pietroszek, 2020: 1). In addition, immersive audiovisual productions for VR and AR using volumetric filmmaking techniques make it possible to incorporate live-action moving images into virtual environments in the form of holograms (Martínez-Cano and Roselló-Tormo, 2021: 2).

Other research groups, such as the VIRTUAL HUMAN INTERACTION LAB at Stanford University (https://www.stanfordvr.com/), conduct research and development on VR and AR audiovisual content and examine the impact these narrative formats can have on audiences. Projects include *Psychology of Augmented Reality*; *1000 Cut Journey*; *Building Long-Term Empathy: A Large-Scale Comparison of Traditional and Virtual Reality Perspective-Taking* (Herrera, Bailenson, Weisz, Ogle and Zaki, 2018); and the experience *Becoming Homeless: A Human Experience* (2018).

These projects are based on other research, such as the study conducted by Ahn et al. in 2013: *The Effect of Embodied Experiences on Self-Other Merging, Attitudes, and Helping Behaviour*.

Our research group has extensive research experience in immersive audiovisual productions for virtual reality and augmented reality. We have also begun conducting proof-of-concept tests involving 360-degree video recording for virtual reality. We also have publications, articles and research studies relating to this type of immersive audiovisual production.

DEVELOPMENT STAGE

We are at an early stage in acquiring the knowledge needed to implement volumetric image capture, as we do not yet have the devices capable of producing this type of video imagery for virtual and augmented reality.
